As a viewer
I am fascinated by a wide range of performance styles, charismatic casts, strong imagery, the build-up and release of tensions and the beauty of surpassed and constantly mutating expectations. Performances can simply be entertaining, but I believe they can also offer starting points for discussion and dialogue.
As a dancer/performer
I enjoy being technically challenged and I have worked very hard to attain a level where I can instinctively trust my own physicality. I believe I have an untainted relationship to movement and can therefore work without hindrance adapting to the needs of each project, location, choreographer, director and their methods.
As a choreographer
My position is more complex. For my own work I am driven by the theatrical agenda behind movements researching ways to communicate and share ideas and emotions between performers and audiences. Choreographically, I tend to favour anything that would help me communicate ideas even if this means moving away from dance or technically challenging techniques.
My work is motivated by everyday life, films, politics, spirituality, philosophy and more importantly human triggers and issues. The dance language draws its inspiration from the imaginary, forbidden, and often hidden inner worlds of the performers. Because of that I am looking for a certain level of trust and openness from my team and I look for dancers/performers who are willing and capable to share their inner feelings and also have the physical abilities, stage presence and experience to do so. My previous works have been described by dancers and critics as, “truly physical”, “emotionally observant”, “sensual”, “embodying rhythm”, “excitingly textured”, “grounded”, “absurd”, “poetic and bravely human”.
Stimulated by the environment and performers, my work is not a reaction against what surrounds me but an ongoing dialogue with my dancers, audiences and the society we live in.
I also work for other projects than ‘my own’ and love collaborating with artists or organisations interested in having dance, performance or movement based work within their events (shows, gallery openings, film etc.) For them I work with the same integrity yet adapting myself to the needs of a new production, team and audiences.
